TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award winners in men's and women's indoor track & field and four Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes have been recognized.
Mike Zampi and
Erik Whiting were named the men's Track and Field Performers of the Week, respectively, while
Cassie Fortini and
Marie Ferro garnered Track Performer and Rookie of the Week honors on the women's side.
A senior captain from Walpole, Mass., Zampi helped RPI claim the NYSCTC Championship title for the first time since 2005, after finishing first overall in the 1000-run in a time of 2:33.81. That time was also an ECAC qualifying time. He then helped the 4x800 relay team to third overall with a mark of 8:11.34. As a team, the Engineers posted 159 points in the field of nine teams.
Zampi, who is a graduate of Walpole High School, has had a solid season, posting top-five finishes in two of the five meets he has competed. Among his top performances was at the multi-divisional Dartmouth Indoor Classic, where he was fifth overall in the 1000-meter run.
Whiting, a senior out of Fultonville, N.Y., won the weight throw at this year's State Meet. His mark of 15.33 meters was also an ECAC qualifying mark.
A former standout at Fonda-Fultonville High School, Whiting has finished 10th or better in the weight throw and also has three top-seven finishes in the shot put. One of his top outings came at the Marc Deneault Invitational, where he posted second overall in the weight throw at the multi-divisional meet.
Fortini, a native of Sandown, N.H., helped the Engineers to a solid finish at the NYSCTC Championships, winning the 400-dash in a time of 60.38. A senior, she also helped the 4x400 relay to second in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:10.02 and helped the 4x200 relay to fourth in another ECAC qualifying mark of 1:50.01. As a team, RPI was third overall with 123 points, finishing first overall among Liberty League teams.
The Timberlane High School graduate has now earned Liberty League Track Performer of the Week twice this season. In seven meets, Fortini has helped pace the squad to several key wins, including the team title at this year's league championship, where she finished grabbed the title in two events.
A freshman from Endwell, N.Y., Ferro finished fifth or better in the two events she competed at the State Meet. She was second overall and first among all rookies in the 5000-run with an ECAC qualifying time of 18:31.76 and placed fifth in the 3000-run with an ECAC mark of 10:45.80.
This is the second weekly honor of the season for Ferro, who has been one of the most consistent distance runners on the squad. She has competed in seven meets, finishing 10th or better at each one, including a second-place finish in the 5000-meter run at the 2010 Liberty League Indoor Championships, which the Engineers won.
Select members of both squads return to action this weekend at the ECAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Smith College. Action begins on Friday and continues through Saturday.
