TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League announced the recipients of the Winter 2009-10 Sportsmanship Awards, as selected by representatives from each member institution's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (RPI) men's swimming & diving and women's indoor track & field teams were chosen as two of the eight winter sport honorees.
Among the characteristics for the award, include respect for opponents and officials, positive support for all competitors, and proper conduct in the arena of competition as defined by the applicable playing rules.
The Rensselaer men's swimming & diving team, which is led by head coach Shannon O'Brien, had a solid season in 2009-10. The squad posted a 3-4 dual meet record, while finishing second at the Liberty League Championships and fifth at the UNYSCSA Championships.
Powered by a number of strong performances, the Engineers were anchored by
Ben LeRose (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette), the Liberty League Rookie of the Year, who claimed victory in five of the seven events he competed in at the conference championships. He also helped lead the charge at the UNYSCSA Meet, posting seventh or better in all seven events he was entered, including five finishes in the top five.
The women's indoor track and field program had an outstanding season, winning the Liberty League Championships and finishing third of nine teams at the NYSCTC Championships.
Guided by head coach
Colin Tory, whose staff earned the conference Coaching Staff of the Year for the second straight season, the Engineers were led by sophomore
Morgan Danner (McLean, VA/Langley). She garnered Most Outstanding Field Performer honors at the league meet, winning the pole vault and the long jump, while finishing third in the triple jump and second in the 4x200 relay.
This marks the fourth and fifth Sportsmanship Awards for Rensselaer teams since the 2008-09 season. The Engineers' men's track & field and the men's tennis teams were both recognized in the Spring of 2009, while the men's cross country team was honored in the Fall of 2009.
