Matt Kelly was named assistant coach for men's basketball in September of 2011. In addition to his role as coach for the Engineers, he also works as an admissions associate in Rensselaer’s Office of Enrollment Management.
A native of Thetford, Vt., Kelly comes to Rensselaer after spending the last five years as an assistant coach at New England College. During his tenure he was responsible for assisting in opponent scouting, fundraising, academic monitoring and all aspects of the program’s recruiting. He helped guide the Pilgrims to their best season in 2010-11 as the team went 17-8 overall with a 6-7 mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Kelly also served as the college’s associate director of undergraduate admissions for four years. In that capacity, he met with and interviewed prospective students and their families, as well as analyzing and reviewing applications for admission. Kelly also created and managed the annual Athletic Information Session, worked as a liaison to the Athletics Department and traveled to various high schools and college fairs.
A volunteer for a number of basketball camps throughout the New England Region, Kelly served as the site director for the 2011 Hoop Group Providence Jam Fest and seven other Hoop Group camps dating back to 2007. Additionally, he managed the New England College Junior Gym Grims Clinic and was responsible for the organization and supervision of all participating student-athletes.
Kelly, who has also worked as a substitute teacher in several school districts in New Hampshire and Vermont, was a three-year letter winner on the Lyndon State soccer team. A captain during his senior season, he helped lead the Hornets to the Sunrise Conference Championship title in 2005.
Kelly received his Bachelor of Science in health science from Lyndon State in 2006. He also earned his Masters of Science in management and strategic leadership from New England in 2010.
