A left wing, Armstrong was a great all-around player. He was named team MVP his junior year, tallying 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 points, the team’s third highest point total. He was also MVP of the RPI Christmas Tournament. Armstrong was a co-captain his senior year. Though he amassed 22 goals and 29 assists during the year, he was known for his defensive play characterized by his exceptional penalty killing. But his scoring was a key also, as he notched two game-winning goals, two game-tying goals, and five go-ahead goals. His career scoring totals are 65 goals and 73 assists for 138 points.
Armstrong, a native of Trenton, Ontario, who graduated from Trenton High School, was a chemistry major with a 3.80 grade point average. He was inducted into Olympia. He went on to earn an M.D. from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1982 on his way to becoming an orthopedic surgeon.
