Ducatte served the Institute as the Director of Athletics from 1971 to 2001. Originally hired as a coach in 1967, he led the growth of the

department from 12 sports to 23, including all 11 of Rensselaer’s women’s intercollegiate varsity teams. Among them was a Division I men’s hockey team that won the NCAA National Championship in 1985.
Ducatte also played an integral role in the renovation of many athletic facilities on campus, including the Houston Field House, and the building of several others, including the Robison Pool and the Ned Harkness Track & Field.
He also established many new events that are now traditions at RPI, including the "Big Red Freakout!", and served on numerous boards and committees throughout his tenure, including as tournament director of the 1992 and 2001 NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Championships.
