A native of Barneveld, N.Y., Tersmette was an NCAA All-America in the decathlon as a senior when he also garnered Most Valuable Field Performer of the Meet at the New York State Outdoor Championship as well as the Liberty League Field Performer of the Year. He was the conference and state Field Performer of the Year in indoor that year, 2005. Tersmette set the school mark in the pentathlon before establishing a new Rensselaer record in the decathlon (6610) and automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championship Meet, where he would finish fifth in Division III. The league's Outdoor Track Performer of the Year in 2004, Tersmette was the team's Most Valuable Performer three times. An aeronautical engineering and mechanical engineering major, he was a CoSIDA National Academic All-America as a senior.
