CLINTON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) cross country teams ran in the Liberty League Championship, hosted by Hamilton College, and both teams turned in outstanding performances. Rensselaer’s men’s team won its first-ever league championship, tying defending champion St. Lawrence with 39 points apiece. RPI’s women’s team finished fourth overall with 82 points. St. Lawrence won the women’s meet with 32 points.
Rensselaer’s women were paced by junior Lauren Carter (Freeport, NY/Kellenburg), who finished second overall with a time of 23:20.7 over the 6k course. Freshman Cathy Malloy (Valbonne, France/Centre International de Valbonne) was second on the team, fifth overall and first among all freshmen with a time of 23:31.3. Carter and Malloy were both named All-Liberty League with Malloy earning Rookie of the Meet honors.
On the men’s side, freshman Bryan Murphy (Albany, NY/Colonie) earned Rookie of the Meet after finishing first among all freshmen. His time of 27:25.6 over the 8k course led the team and was good enough for fourth overall. Classmate Chris Donais (Haverhill, NY/Phillips Academy) was fifth overall (27:31.1), senior Matt Haringa (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) was seventh (27:36.0) and freshman Conor Murphy (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) was eighth (27:41.2). All four were named All-Liberty League.
St. Lawrence’s Eric Donohoe won the men’s meet with a time of 26:57.6 while SLU’s Liz Ludovici won the women’s event with a time of 22:41.4.
