TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team overcame an early goal against as freshman Sara Stylinski (Southington, CT/Southington) scored both goals and the Red Hawks defeated Utica College, 2-1, in a non-league game at Harkness Field.  With the win, RPI snaps a six-game losing streak and improves to 4-6 on the season.  The Pioneers, who saw their six-game winning streak snapped, are now 9-3.

“We needed a win like that,” said Rensselaer fourth-year head coach Bridget LaNoir.  “We had been playing well but were not getting any breaks.  It’s really nice to get some breaks, especially when the result is a win.”

Utica jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5:31 into the first half when senior forward Shannon Rohacek (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) dribbled down the center of the circle and scored an unassisted goal.  Stylinski tied the game 13:14 later when she deflected a Lisa Pak (Metheun, MA/Metheun) shot that came from the top of the circle into the goal.  Pak, who is also a freshman forward, earned the only assist on the play.

Stylinski put RPI ahead 10:32 into the second half when she knocked in a rebound of her own shot for an unassisted goal.

Senior goalie Amanda Lund (Chester, CT/Valley Regional) earned the win in the cage by making two saves for Rensselaer, which outshot the Pioneers 19-4.  Sophomore Janeen Yarmosh (Wheatley Heights, NY/Haif Hollow Hills West) stopped seven shots, including six in the first half, in the loss.

Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday afternoon when Oswego St. comes to Troy for a 1pm non-league contest.  Utica hosts Oneonta St. on Friday afternoon at 4pm.
