Anchorage, AK - The University of Alaska-Anchorage (UAA) scored four goals in the third period to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 6-3, in a non-conference men’s hockey game. With the victory, the Seawolves improve to 1-0-0 overall, while the Engineers are now 0-2-0 overall.
Senior Chris Hussey (Plymouth, MN/Avon Old Farms) put Rensselaer ahead 1-0 early in first period when he scored in front of the net off a rebound shot from Andrew Lord (West Vancouver, BC/Vernon Vipers). Senior Scott Romfo (Blaine, MN/Tri-City Storm) was also credited with an assist.
UAA junior Mark Smith (Edmonton, AB) tied the score up 1-1 at 10:41 of the first period when he collected a pass from Billy Smith (Sterling, AK) and put the puck over the shoulder of Rensselaer goalie Jordan Alford (Red Deer, AB/Canmore Eagles). The Seawolves scored again at the 17:50 mark and they took a 2-1 lead into the lockerroom.
Following a scoreless second period, Hussey notched his second goal of the game with a short-handed effort at 2:14 of the third. Off a pass from Brad Farynuk (Enderby, BC/Vernon Vipers), he put the puck past the left side of Seawolves goalie Nathan Lawson (Calgary, Alb.) UAA then took control, getting goals from Shane Lovedahl (Anchorage, AK), Ales Parez (Nymburk, Czech Rep./Chicago) and Chris Tarkir (Fresno, CA/Chilliwack) to take a 5-2 lead. RPI battled back as freshman Seth Klerer (Thornhill, ON/North York Rangers) pulled the Engineers within two goals with a shorthanded goal at 15:45. Klerer collected a pass from Romfo, skated up the ice and scored to make the score 5-3.
Junior Chad Anderson (Chisago City, MN/Tri-City Storm) sealed the victory for the Seawolves scoring the sixth and final goal with four minutes left in the period. Freshman Mat Robinson (Calgary, Alb.) recorded four assists in the game for UAA.
Lawson finished with 28 saves for the win in the UAA goal. Alford also finished with 28 stops.
The men's hockey team is back in action Saturday at 4:05pm (8:05pm Eastern) when it squares off against Michigan Tech in the final day of competition at the Nye Frontier Classic.
