Box Score
TROY, NY – Junior Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) scored at 19:56 of the third period and senior Rosina Schiff (St. Louis, MO/Jefferson High) made 35 saves, including six in overtime, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s hockey team to a 1-1 tie with Colgate University in a Division I non-league contest at the Houston Field House.
With Schiff on the bench for an extra attacker, Rensselaer got the game-tying goal when Daniel picked up a loose puck in the slot and sent a shot wide to the left of the net. She gathered the rebound behind the net and wrapped the puck around, sending a backhanded shot just under the crossbar.
Schiff made the goal stand as she made several outstanding saves, including an impressive glove save on an outstanding left point slap shot from sophomore defensemen Kate Wolgemuth (Anchorage, AK/North American Hockey Academy) in the extra session. Junior Brook Wheeler (Brussels, ON/Culver Academy) stopped 14 saves in the net for Colgate.
The Raiders gained the lead at 3:40 of the second period when Allison Paiano (Orleans, ON/Ottawa Raiders) tallied a power play goal. A senior, Paiano scored from the slot when her shot hit the post, came back to bounce off Schiff and then crossed the goal line. Senior Becky Irvine (Lakeview, NS) and junior Tara French (Truro, NS/Deerfield Academy) earned the assists on the play.
Colgate, which is now 0-1-1, finished with 14 shots in the first period, ten in the second and six in both the third and overtime periods. The Raiders were also perfect on the penalty kill, holding Rensselaer to an 0-for-7 with the advantage. The Engineers, who are now 3-0-1, had four shots in the first, five in the second and six in the third. They were 3-for-4 when shorthanded.
RPI returns to action on Friday night at Robert Morris (7:35pm). The Raiders play at Providence next Saturday night at 2pm.
