TROY, N.Y. – Ursinus College, the top-ranked field hockey team in Division III, got two first half goals and held off Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-1, in a non-conference game at Harkness Field.  With the victory, Ursinus improves to 11-2 on the season.  RPI is now 5-7.

“We played a solid game and I am very proud of our team,” Rensselaer head coach Bridget LaNoir said.  “I thought we competed hard and played right along with a team that is one of the best in the country.”

Ursinus got on the scoreboard just 1:19 into the game when junior Molly Stevens (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) scored on a cross from sophomore Lindsay Cappa (Oley, PA/Oley).  The Bears doubled their lead when junior Karen Wendler (Burlington, NJ/Burlington) scored from the left side of the circle off a corner.  Freshman Kait Sutherland (Perkiomenville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) was credited with the assist after passing the ball from the left side of the cage.

Sophomore Michelle Clemente (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) pulled Rensselaer to within one at 21:56 when she scored from the left side of the goal.  Freshman Lisa Pak (Methuen, MA/Methuen), who passed the ball to Clemente down low, earned the assist on the play.

Senior Amanda Lund (Chester, CT/Valley Regional) made 14 saves in the RPI net.  Junior Erin Bender (Lititz, PA/Warwick) totaled two saves for Ursinus, which outshot their hosts, 22-4.  The Bears also held an advantage in penalty corners, 15-1.

Rensselaer returns to action on Friday afternoon at Union in a Liberty League match (4pm).  Ursinus plays Centennial Conference foe Muhlenburg on Wednesday at 7pm.
