SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.--The 12th-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team defeated Rensselaer, 5-1, to clinch the second seed in the upcoming Liberty League Playoffs. The Thoroughbreds are now 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the league. The Red Hawks are 6-8 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Skidmore's Katie Hallaran (Middlebury, CT/Westover) set the tone early with her first goal of the season just two minutes into the game. Annie Ledyard (West Grove, PA/Lawrenceville) made it 2-0 five minutes later and then scored again at 27:15. Rensselaer battled back as freshman Sara Stylinski (Southington, CT/Southington) brought the Red Hawks to within two goals when she scored near the end of the first half.
Shaila Delea (Hiram, ME/Sacopee Valley) and Chelsea Lisaius (Warren, VT/Harwood Union) scored second half goals for the Thoroughbreds.
Stephanie Reed (Barker, NY/Barker) had three saves for Skidmore, while Amanda Lund (Chester, CT/Valley Regional) had eight saves and Liz Szewcak (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi) tallied two saves in the Red Hawks goal.
RPI's field hockey team returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Middlebury, Vt., to take on the 9th-ranked Panthers of Middlebury at 3:30pm. Skidmore returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Williams for a 4pm match up.
