Box Score

TROY, N.Y. — Rensselaer scored three power play goals in the second period on its way to a 4-0 victory over the Army Black Knights at Houston Field House.  The win improves the Engineers to 3-2-0 and marks the 200th career victory for head coach Dan Fridgen.  Army is now 0-4-0 on the season.

Freshman Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria) made 14 saves in the RPI net for his first career shutout.   He stopped five in the first period, four in the second and five in the third.

Rensselaer jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as junior Kevin Broad (Humboldt, Sask./Chiliwack Chiefs) skated up the ice and passed to freshman Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame), who ripped the puck past the right side of Army goalie Brad Roberts (Cassville, NY/Canterbury School) at 9:05 of the first period for a short-handed marker.

Junior Oren Eizenman (Toronto, ON/Wexford Raiders) put the Engineers ahead 2-0 less than a minute into the second period, scoring past Roberts.  Off a shot by senior Kevin Croxton (Calgary, Alb./Camrose Kodiaks), Eizenman found the puck in a mass of players in front of the net for his second goal of the season.  Senior Brad Farynuk (Enderby, BC/Vernon Vipers) was also awarded an assist.   Broad made the score 3-0 at the 17:48 mark, deflecting a shot by Keith MCWilliams (Valencia, CA/Omaha Lancers) into the Army net.  Freshman Seth Klerer (Thornhill, ON/North York Rangers) added another goal at 18:04 to put Rensselaer up 4-0 at the end of the second period.  Mark Yurkewecz (Troy, NY/Cushing Academy) and Farynuk were credited with the assists.

The two teams battled through a scoreless third period in which the Knights outshot the Engineers, 5-2.

Roberts finished with 29 saves in the Army goal, including 11 in the first period and 16 in the second.

Rensselaer's men’s ice hockey team hosts Northeastern on Friday in a non-league matchup at 7pm at the Houston Field House.  Army will also be back in action on Friday as it opens its Atlantic Hockey League schedule at Holy Cross at 7pm.
