CANTON, N.Y. -The St. Lawrence University field hockey team closed out their Liberty League schedule on Saturday afternoon, and did so in impressive fashion as the Saints defeated RPI 6-2 at North Country Field. With the victory the Saints improve to 8-6-0 overall, 3-4-0 in league, while the Red Hawks are now 6-9 overall and 1-6 in the league.
RPI came out strong and Michelle Clemente netted the first goal at 25:01 of the first period for the Red Hawks. The Saints bounced right back just over a minute later when Carling Delaney scored her second goal of the year to tie the game at one.
In what shaped up to be an exciting, back-and-forth first half of play, the Saints and Red Hawks went to halftime tied at two goals a piece, as Saegar Philpot put the Saints up 2-1 on an unassisted goal when she took her own rebound and tucked it past the RPI goalkeeper Amanda Lund at 17:44. The Red Hawks responded without haste, as Kristina Baker tallied RPI’s second goal with 13:24 remaining, and the two teams went to halftime tied.
The first half was statistically even, with both St. Lawrence and RPI having 11 and 10 shots respectively and two goals a piece, the second half belonged to Fran Grembowicz’s Saints. Coming out determined to earn the win, senior Liz Allison opened the second half scoring at 33:37 off a penalty corner from Erin Mellow to give the Saints back the lead.
Melissa Pittelli tallied her first career goal from Julia Kiernan at 25:50 giving the Saints and goaltender Emilie Lannamann a comfortable lead. The Saints’ best defense was their offense, as the midfielders shut down the RPI break and kept the ball in the offensive zone.
Merrigan took advantage of her opportunities and scored her first and second career goals a mere one minute and twenty seconds, giving the Saints a 6-2 lead, and capping the scoring for the game.
Amanda Lund had 14 saves for RPI, and Emilie Lannamann and Lindsey Taylor combined for 11 saves for the St. Lawrence victory.
The Saints will be in action Sunday for its final game of the season. The game begins at noon versus SUNY Geneseo.
