Women's Hockey Wins Division I Debut, 4-0

The Engineers made a successful Division I debut as they defeated Sacred Heart, 4-0.

TROY, NY – Freshman Melanie Guillemette (North Bay, ON/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) had a goal and an assist and the Engineers limited Sacred Heart University to just fives shots on goal as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s hockey team downed the Pioneers, 4-0, in the Engineers’ Division I debut in a game played at the Houston Field House.  Rensselaer is now 1-0-0 while the Pioneers fall to 0-1-1.

After a scoreless first period, junior forward Holly O’Donohue (North Andover, MA/Pingree School) got Rensselaer its first goal at the Division I level when she deflected a point shot by Guillemette at 16:57 of the second period.  Junior Ciara Libaridian (Los Angeles, CA/U. of Findlay) also assisted on the goal.  The Engineers doubled their lead when Guillemette scored from the right point at 19:36.  Emily Donowick (West Seneca, NY/Nichols School) was credited with the lone assist on the goal.

Freshman Nicole McDonald (Ottawa, ON/Ottawa Raiders) added Rensselaer’s third goal when she skated down the right side, cut in front and stuffed her own rebound into the back of the net.  Classmate Jamie-Lynn Stewart (Cambridge, ON/Cambridge Jr. Fury) and senior Allison Malcolm (Lyme, NH/Cushing Academy) earned the assists on the play.  Sophomore Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) added a goal with just 28 seconds remaining for the final margin.  Senior Julie Welte (Pueblo, CO/Colorado Xtreme) assisted.

RPI senior Rosina Schiff (St. Louis, MO/Jefferson High) stopped all five shots she faced for the win.  For Sacred Heart, junior Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK/Groton School) stopped 44 of the 48 she faced, including 18 in the first period, 13 in the second and 13 in the third period.

These same two teams face off against one another on Sunday at 2pm at the Houston Field House.
