TROY, N.Y. – Hamilton College came from behind to beat the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) field hockey team 2-1 in overtime today amid heavy rain and rough field conditions. The Continentals improve to 4-5 overall, 2-3 in the Liberty League while the Red Hawks are now 3-6 overall, 0-4 in the league.
RPI jumped out to an early lead at 31:13 of the first half when freshman Sara Stylinski (Southington, CT/Southington) scored past Hamilton goalie Erin Weinstock (Pennington, NJ/Stuart Country Day) off a cross from freshman Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga).
The two teams battled through the rain and wind in the second half. Hamilton continued to put pressure onto the RPI net, finally scoring late in the second half when Kristen Archibald (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) netted the game-tying goal with 24 seconds remaining on the clock. Sophomore Marley Berns (Rochester, NY/Brighton) assisted on the goal.
In the overtime, junior Kerry Leonard (Stamford, CT/University of Southern Maine) sent a pass up the middle to sophomore Natalie Schwerin (Oyster Bay, NY/Saint George), who put the ball past Red Hawk goalie Amanda Lund (Chester, CT/Valley Regional) for the game-winner.
Lund finished with six saves in the game, while Weinstock finished with two saves for Hamilton.
