Charest's late three-pointers help Red Hawks down Oswego St., 74-72

OSWEGO, N.Y.- Freshman guard Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy) made a pair of three-point shots late in overtime to put Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) ahead for good on its way to a 74-72 victory over Oswego St. With the win, RPI improves to 2-0 while Oswego, the top-ranked team in the state, falls to 1-1.

The homestanding Lakers jumped out to a four-point lead (67-63) early in the overtime and they held a five-point advantage (72-67) with 1:21 left before Charest scored the next six points. She cut the Red Hawks’ deficit to two points at 1:21 and gave RPI the lead with another three-pointer with 39 seconds remaining. A free throw from sophomore Missy Jackman (Danvers, MA/Danvers) with just four seconds remaining concluded the scoring.

Sophomore forward Tory Lyons (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) led Rensselaer in scoring with 23 points in 40 minutes. She also had five rebounds (2 offensive) and an assist. Junior Kristi Baranowski (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds (2 off.) while Charest finished with nine points, all on three-pointers.

Lacey Kimpland (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley), who had 22 points, and Samantha Driscoll (Lisle, NY/Whitney Point), who scored 14, led Oswego. Sarah Lombard (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga) chipped in with ten points and a team-best eight rebounds (2 off.).

Rensselaer returns to action on Tuesday night when the Red Hawks make their home debut at 8pm against Williams. Oswego St. next plays on Sunday afternoon at St. Lawrence (2pm).
