CANTON, N.Y. - Freshman wing Kevin DeVergilio scored a goal with 6:39 to play in regulation to lift St. Lawrence to a 3-2 ECAC Hockey League victory over Rensselaer at Appleton Arena.

The Saints, ranked 20 th nationally, swept the opening weekend in conference play and are now 6-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in league play.  RPI, which tied Clarkson 3-3 on Friday, is 4-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in ECACHL play.

DeVergilio snapped a 2-2 tie when he took a long lead pass from freshman defenseman Shawn Fensel on his backhand, tipped the puck in front of him and walked in on RPI goalie Mathias Lange, snapping a close-range shot over Lange’s shoulder and under the crossbar at 13:29 of the third.  It was the fifth goal of the season for the Saint rookie.

RPI broke out on top as senior wing Kevin Croxton scored his sixth of the season just as a two-man advantage expired for the Engineers. Croxton tipped a fluttering puck past Saint goalie Justin Pesony at 7:08 for the early lead, but the Saints scored a power play goal of their own to tie it just under ten minutes later. Kyle Rank scored the goal as he came out from behind the net and put it over the shoulder Lange at 17:00 to tie it at 1-1.

RPI regained the lead at 15:42 of the second period when junior wing Tommy Green put back a rebound for his first goal of the year, but the advantage didn’t last long as Saint rookie defenseman Jared Ross scored his second of the season on a blast from the point after a faceoff win by Brock McBride at 17:14 .

The Saints outshot RPI 29-18 with Pesony finishing with 16 saves for his sixth win of the year while Lange had 26 saves for the Engineers.
