KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - Rensselaer scored twice in the first 21:50 to take command and the Red Hawks went on to defeat Keuka, 3-0, in the first round of the ECAC Upstate Men's Soccer Championship. With the win, RPI is now 9-7-2 and advances to the semi-finals at top-seeded SUNY Geneseo on Saturday at 11am. Keuka finishes the season with a 9-6-1 record.
Senior Craig DiDomenico (Commack, NY/Commack) had a goal and an assist to lead the Red Hawks. He set up the game's first goal, a marker by sophomore Gary Sroka (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) at 14:53 and he scored the third goal at 61:22. Freshman Mike Henzel (Niwot, CO/Niwot) also scored for RPI while senior Ed Sellitto (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) collected an assist.
In goal, junior Nick Bochette (Schaghticoke, NY/Hoosick Valley) made seven saves in 76:43 before being relieved by sophomore John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem). Greg Lewin stopped six shots in the goal for the Storm.
The winner of the game between RPI and Geneseo (12-3-4) faces the winner of the other semi-final, which pits RIT (8-6-4), the second seed, against St. John Fisher (9-8-1), the third seed, on Saturday at 1:30pm. Both of Saturday’s games, and Sunday’s championship match (12pm), will be held at SUNY Geneseo.
