TROY, N.Y. – Five players reached double figures in points and Bowdoin College held a double-digit lead throughout on its way to a 71-61 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a Division III women’s basketball game at Robison Gym. With the win, the visiting Polar Bears, the second-ranked team in the nation, improve to 4-1. Rensselaer is now 2-2.
Led by a big first half from junior guard Julia Loonin (New York, NY/Berkeley Carroll), Bowdoin opened a 14-point lead at the break. The Polar Bears increased their margin to as many as 22 points in the second half before Rensselaer pulled to within ten points at the end.
Loonin, who had 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the first half, including three three-pointers, finished with 19 points to lead Bowdoin. She also had three rebounds (1 offensive) and two assists in 26 minutes. Eileen Flaherty (Fairfield, CT/Lauralton Hall) and Jill Anelauskas (Medfield, MA/Medfield) had 12 points apiece while Justine Pouravelis (Old Orchard Beach, ME/Catherine McAuley) had 11 and Marissa Berne (Falmouth, ME/Catherine McAuley) chipped in with ten. Alexis Kaubris (Rumford, ME/Dirigo) had seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Polar Bears.
For Rensselaer, freshman Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy) had a team-high 12 points with four rebounds (1 off.) while junior guard Destany Eagles (Conway, SC/Carolina Forest) scored ten points with one rebound (0 off.), two assists and two steals.
RPI returns to the court on Tuesday night at city-rival Russell Sage (6pm) while Bowdoin plays at Staten Island on Sunday.
