TROY, N.Y. – Middlebury College jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead and held off Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 69-65, in a Division III men’s basketball game at Robison Gym. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 6-0 to match their best start since the 1917-18 team went 7-0. Rensselaer falls to 1-5 despite a 30-point, 18-rebound effort from senior forward Tom Schneider (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin).
Four players were in double figures for Middlebury, led by junior guard Wil Hyatt (Amesbury, MA/Philips Exeter), who scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds (1 offensive) with a team-high five assists. Sophomore Mike Walsh (Needham, MA/Belmont Hill) added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while senior Sam Daly (Providence, RI/Moses Brown) and sophomore Andrew Harris (Waterbury Center, VT/Harwood) both chipped in with 11 points.
In addition to Schneider’s 30 points, the Red Hawks saw senior forward Matt Zepernick (Northport, NY/Northport) reach double figures with 13 points. He also had six rebounds.
Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday afternoon at Wentworth Institute of Technology (3pm) while Middlebury visits Johnson St. on Thursday evening (7pm).
