TROY, NY – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Sarah Merlin (Sharon, MA/Sharon) scored both of RPI’s goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the field hockey team to a 2-1 win over SUNY Geneseo this afternoon at Harkness Field.
Rensselaer got the victory when Merlin, a midfielder, tallied at 2:52 of the first overtime, converting a well-timed cross from freshman Lisa Pak (Methuen, MA/Methuen). With the win, Rensselaer improves to 3-0, while the Blue Knights fall to 1-3.
RPI got on the board first when Merlin scored off a pass from Pak, putting it past Geneseo goalie Amanda Carver (Canastota, NY/Canastota) at 43:16. The Blue Knights came back just minutes later as junior Karen Garnish (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) tallied an unassisted goal past Red Hawks goalie Liz Szewczak (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi). Merlin’s second goal gave Rensselaer it’s second overtime win of the season.
“We went into the game with specific goals in mind but didn't hold true them as consistently as we had hoped,” said Rensselaer head coach Bridget LaNoir. “We were able to put a few good things together, but are really forcing ourselves to work consistently at a much higher level. We have a lot of work to do before our league play.”
Rensselaer is next in action on Thursday against Oneonta St. at 7pm at Harkness Field. SUNY Geneseo returns to play on Wednesday when it hosts Elmira at 4pm.
