The seventh-ranked William Smith College field hockey team got four points from junior forward Sophie Dennis (Port Byron, NY/Dana L. West) and won its Liberty League opener, defeating the Red Hawks, 4-1.
Dennis opened the scoring in the 13th minute, redirecting a shot by senior Lauren Fuller (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) past the Red Hawks’ senior goalie Amanda Lund (Chester, CT/Valley) for her sixth goal of the season. Lund finished with 13 saves.
Rensselaer (3-2, 0-1 Liberty) evened the score ten minutes later on a shot by sophomore
Sarah Merlin (Sharon, MA/Sharon).
The tally served as a wake up call for the Herons (5-1, 1-0), who entered the game riding a 17-game regular season conference win streak. Senior Amy Kuzio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) put William Smith back in front at the 23:55 mark and 85 seconds later, Dennis set up senior Maggie Dolan’s (Towson, MD/Towson) team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The Herons, who led 3-1 at halftime, got their fourth goal in the 59th minute for the final margin.
Senior Sue Jordan (Boothbay, ME/Boothbay) picked up the win with four saves.
Rensselaer is right back in action on Saturday afternoon at the University of Rochester in another league game. William Smith hosts Vassar on Saturday at 2pm.
