Comeback Bid Falls Short as Football Loses in Triple Overtime

GENEVA, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) fought back from a 24-point deficit, aided by a school record five touchdown receptions from junior tight end Jon Branche, to force overtime but the Engineers fell at Hobart College, 56-48 in triple overtime, in a Liberty League contest.  With the loss, which came in the longest game in school history, RPI falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.  Hobart is now 3-0 and 1-0.

The Statesmen jumped out to a 24-0 lead before Branche scored his first touchdown of the game late in the second quarter.  Rensselaer went on to outscore Hobart by 18 points in the second half to tie the game 34-34 at the end of regulation.  After both teams scored on their first two possessions of overtime, the Statesmen went ahead on it third try before holding off the Engineers.

Branche, a native of Schenectady, N.Y., finished with 12 receptions for 217 yards and five touchdowns.  RPI's ground game was led by junior Jay Bernardo, who had 122 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries.  Freshman quarterback Jimmy Robertson connected on 28-of-54 passes for 394 yards and five touchdowns.
