Red Hawks tally three second half goals to beat Hartwick, 3-1

TROY, NY – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Kristina Baker (Bolton, MA/Nashoba Regional) tallied two second half goals to lead the field hockey team to a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Hartwick College this afternoon at Harkness Field. With the win, Rensselaer improves to 2-0, while the Hawks fall to 1-1.

Hartwick got on the board first when freshman Kate Hadeka (Castleton, VT/The Gunnery School) took advantage of a scramble in front of the goal and scored into the right side of the cage midway through the first half.

The homestanding Red Hawks came back with three goals in the second half, including the first two by Baker, for the victory. A freshman forward, Baker scored through the pads of Hartwick goalie Ashley King (Barnstable, MA/Barnstable) off a cross from senior Patty Rodziewicz (Wayside, NJ/Ocean Township) to tie the score at one at the 39:19 mark. Rensselaer took the lead on Baker’s second goal, a shot past the left side of King just two minutes later. Freshman Lisa Pak (Metheuen, MA/Metheuen) added a goal near the end of the half for the final margin.

“We saw a big improvement in ourselves from the start of the game to the finish,” said Rensselaer head coach Bridget LaNoir. “We were able to harness our emotions, get a couple of goals and the win.”

Senior Amanda Lund (Chester, CT/Valley Regional) finished with six saves in net for the Red Hawks, while King posted five in the Hartwick goal.

Rensselaer is next in action on Saturday against SUNY Geneseo at 1pm at Harkness Field. Hartwick also returns to the field on Saturday when it hosts Scranton in Oneonta, N.Y., beginning at 1pm.
