TROY, N.Y. – Max Taylor (Ottawa, ON/Cumberland Grads) scored the game-winning goal early in the third period and three different players tallied unassisted markers as St. Lawrence University defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 4-3, in an ECACHL Division I men’s hockey contest at the Houston Field House. With the victory, the Saints improve to 13-7-1 overall and 7-2-0 in league play. The Engineers fall to 9-10-3 overall, including a 3-3-3 record in the ECACHL.
The Saints went up 1-0 early in the first period on a tally by senior winger T. J. Trevelyan (Mississauga, ON/Georgetown Raiders). Trevelyan stole the puck from an RPI defenseman in the neutral zone and skated in alone on goalie Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core), who he beat from between the circles. The Engineers battled back to tie the score less than ten minutes later when junior forward Kevin Broad (Humboldt, SK/Chilliwack Chiefs) scored from the bottom of the left face-off circle for a power play goal. Senior defenseman Scott Romfo (Blaine, MN/Tri-City Storm) started the play at the blue line and passed the puck up to Reed Kipp (Victoria, BC/Vernon Vipers), who found Broad skating toward the Saints’ goal.
Junior forward Kyle Rank (Elmira, ON/Elmira Sugar Kings) scored at 2:47 of the second period and sophomore Charlie Giffin (Milton, ON/Oakville Blades) at 15:18 to give the Saints a 3-1 lead after two periods. Rank stole the puck on the near-side boards and ripped a wrist shot from the left circle for his ninth of the season and Giffin was credited with his third of the year after his centering pass hit a Rensselaer defenseman and slipped past Lange.
Taylor made it 4-1 in favor of the visitors at 1:48 of the third period. Rank drove the net and took a shot from the bottom of the right circle. The puck rebounded out to Taylor, who put it past the RPI goalie. Rensselaer pulled within two goals when sophomore Andrew Lord (West Vancouver, BC/Vernon Vipers) tipped a Jonathan Ornelas (Mississauga, ON/Milton IceHawks) shot past Saints goalie Justin Pesony (Edmonton, AB/North Battleford Stars) at 6:53. Senior Keith MCWilliams (Valencia, CA/Omaha Lancers) was credited with the second assist. Freshman Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame) made it a 4-3 game with less than two minutes remaining, but the Saints held on for the victory.
Pesony finished with 18 saves in net for St. Lawrence, while Lange recorded 30 saves in the loss.
