PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rensselaer men’s hockey team scored three goals in the second period to defeat Brown University, 3-1, in ECACHL action.  With the victory, the Engineers improve to 11-10-3 overall and 5-3-3 in league play. The Bears are now 3-11-4 overall with a 2-7-2 ECACHL record.

After a scoreless first period, which saw RPI outshoot Brown, 11-6, the Engineers exploded for two quick goals to take a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the second stanza.  Freshman Kurt Colling (Ripley, ON/Vernon Vipers) tallied his third goal of the season, and his second in as many games, at the 2:33 mark.  After collecting a pass from classmate Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame), Colling used an aggressive effort to the right of Brown goaltender Adam D’Alba (Glencoe, IL/Chicago Steel) to put the puck in the net for the power-play marker.  Jake Luthi (Palmer, AK/Sioux Falls Stampede) was credited with the second assist.

Less than 45 seconds later, Keith MCWilliams (Valencia, CA/Omaha Lancers) scored the eventual game-winner off a pass from Mark Yurkewecz (Troy, NY/Cushing Academy).  The goal, MCWilliams’ sixth of the season, was the fifth point for the senior defenseman in his last four games.

Brown’s Jeff Prough (Farmington Hills, MI/Sioux Falls Stampede) pulled the Bears to within a goal, one-timing the puck past RPI goalie Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) off a feed from freshman Matt Vokes (Auburn, MA/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) on the power-play at the 7:34 mark.  The Engineers regained their two-goal advantage when sophomore Jonathan Ornelas’ (Mississauga, ON/Milton IceHawks) shot from the slot beat D’Alba.

Lange finished with 15 saves in net for Rensselaer to improve his personal record to 10-8-3 overall.  D’Alba recorded 33 saves in the loss.

RPI returns to action on Saturday night when it travels to Yale (7pm) to take on the Bulldogs.  Brown also returns to action on Saturday, hosting Union (7pm).
