POTSDAM, N.Y. – Six players tallied multiple points to lead the #9 Clarkson Golden Knights to a 7-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in non-conference women’s hockey action at Cheel Arena. With the victory, the Knights improve to 18-7-1 overall. The Engineers are now 13-4-3 on the season.
Rensselaer took a 1-0 lead mid-way through the first period when senior Julie Welte (Pueblo, CO/Colorado Xtreme) tallied her sixth goal of the season. Freshman Jaime Jacquard-Sowa (North Vancouver, BC/BC Breakers), who was at the near boards, collected the puck from Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) and skated behind the net. Jacquard-Sowa took the shot, which rebounded out to Welte in the slot. She deposited it past Clarkson goalie Kira Hurley (Pickering, ON/Leaside Kings) at the 11:02 mark.
Sophomore Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ON/North American Hockey Academy) tied the game 1-1, putting in the rebound of a Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, PQ/Lafleche College) shot with less than two minutes remaining in the first period. Gaudet shot the puck at senior goaltender Rosina Schiff (St. Louis, MO/Jefferson High School), who made the initial stop, but the puck got loose and trickled out to Beazer, who buried it.
The Golden Knights erupted for four goals in the second period, including two on the power-play late in the stanza. Junior captain Lindsay Williams (Mississauga, ON/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) started the flurry, beating Schiff top-shelf on a shot from the left circle at the 2:51 mark. Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH/Ohio Flames) made it a 3-1 game when she lifted the puck over the glove of the Rensselaer goalie. Beazer tallied her second goal of the afternoon at the 16:27 mark when her shot deflected off an Engineers’ defender and past Schiff. Clarkson added another power play goal from Shaidle with less than two minutes remaining for a 5-1 lead into the second intermission.
Sophomore Meghan Park (Petrolia, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks) added two goals in the third period to give the Knights the final margin.
Hurley and junior Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, AB/Washington Pride), who took over in net after the fourth Clarkson goal, combined for nine saves.
Schiff, who broke the Engineers’ all-time minutes played record set in 2001 by Laura DeNuccio (3,370:33), and freshman Emily Ford (Plymouth, MA/Tabor Academy) combined for 20 saves in net for Rensselaer.
RPI is back in action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Burlington, Vt., to take on the Catamounts of UVM at 2pm. Clarkson returns to action next Friday when it hosts Quinnipiac at 7pm.
