POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Vassar women’s soccer team scored a goal in each half to earn its first Liberty League win of the season Friday afternoon, defeating Rensselear, 2-0, at Prentiss Field. The Brewers improve to 4-5-1 and 1-3-1 in league play, while RPI falls to 4-7-1 and 0-5-0 in the Liberty League.
The Brewers tested senior Red Hawk keeper Tara Marandino (Massapequa, NY,
Massapequa) early and often as they outshot RPI 7-3 in the first half. Freshman Anna Robinson (Toronto, ON/Havergal College), sophomore Emma Kemp (Albany, CA/Albany) and junior Nicole Daddazio (New York, NY/York Prepatory School) kept Marandino busy with some quality shots that the tender adeptly saved.
In the 37th minute the Brewers offensive attack finally broke through.
Sophomore Nola Solomon (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) picked up the assist, sending a soaring corner kick into the box where senior Ali Fantl (West Hartford, CT/Hall) volleyed the ball into the upper netting.
Robinson padded the Vassar lead in the 57th minute on an assist from Kemp.
Kemp fed the ball to Robinson who beat the final defender in a foot race, drawing Marandino out of the net and then sending a shot off the opposite post into the goal.
With 14:35 left to play in the game, RPI almost got on the board but senior goalie Lisa Strumwasser (Santa Monica, CA/Santa Monica) refused to allow the Red Hawks to score their first Liberty League goal in her net.
Fighting off two Red Hawks, Strumwasser punched away a ball that mostly likely would have been a goal if either of the RPI players had made contact.
Strumwasser had six saves in goal while Marandino had three.
The Brewers travel to California this week to play Mills College while Rensselaer returns to action tomorrow, hosting MCLA at 3:30pm.
