Vassar scores three second half goals to win

TROY, N.Y. – Vassar College scored three times in the second half, including a goal and an assist from senior Court Steiner (Tarzana, CA/Charminade College Prep), to post a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League men’s soccer action at Harkness Field. With the victory, Vassar improves to 5-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the league. The Red Hawks fall to 4-10-0 and 0-5-0.

Sophomore Tim Wisner (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) got Rensselaer on the board at the 30:47 mark with an unassisted tally. After corralling a loose ball, Wisner battled around a defender and shot from 18 yards out, past the left side of Brewers goalie Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East).

Vassar battled back in the second half, scoring two goals in a four-minute span to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Ben Fox (Dublin, NH/ConVal) tied the game off a header pass from freshman Brian Bianchetti (Tustin, CA/Foothill) at 63:77. Senior Adam Marsh (Bloomfield, MI/Cranbrook-Kingswood) broke the deadlock 4:05 later with his fourth tally of the season. Steiner, who fed Marsh, earned the assist on the goal.

Steiner rounded out the scoring when he headed a pass from Matthew Belli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) past Rensselaer goalie John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem) at 75:21.

Cetel posted five saves in the win for Vassar. Thibdeau made one stop in defeat and junior Jeffery Krywanczyk (Chazy, NY/Chazy Central Rural) made three saves in relief for the Red Hawks.

Both teams close out their Liberty League regular season schedules next weekend. Rensselaer hosts Clarkson (4pm) and St. Lawrence (2pm) on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Vassar welcomes St. Lawrence on Friday (4pm) and Clarkson on Saturday (2pm).
