Engineers give Appert first win

DENVER, Colo. - Junior Jordan Alford (Red Deer, AB/Canmore Eagles) made 38 saves, including 13 in the first period, to lead the Rensselaer men's hockey team to a 2-1 win over the University of Denver.  With the win, the first under head coach Seth Appert, the Engineers improve to 1-0-1.  DU, the 11th-ranked team in the nation, is now 2-3-0.

Sophomore Seth Klerer (Thornhill, ON/North York Rangers) broke a 1-1 tie at 5:10 of the third period when he ripped a wristshot from the left face-off dot past Denver goaltender Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, MI) on the stick side. Kurt Colling (Ripley, ON/Vernon Vipers) had the only assist on the goal, Klerer’s first of the season.

Denver broke out in front with a power play goal at 13:21 of the first period when freshman Brock Trotter (Brandon, MB) tallied on a long rebound of an Adrian Veideman (Sicamous, BC) drive. Chris Butler (St. Louis, MO) also picked un a helper on the goal, Trotter’s second of the season.

Senior captain Kirk MacDonald (Victoria, BC/Victoria Salsa) tied the game for the Engineers when he scored into the top of the net with the visitors enjoying a 5x3 power play advantage. For MacDonald, the goal was his first of the season and first since returning from a battle with testicular cancer. Kevin Broad and Jonathan Ornelas earned the assists on the play.

Mannino finished with 22 saves in defeat for DU, for whom Appert was an assistant coach for nine years prior to taking over for the Engineers.

These same two teams meet on Saturday night at 9pm (EST) in Denver.
