DENVER, Colo. - Denver scored three goals in the third period to break open a close game and the 11th-ranked Pioneers went on to hand Rensselaer a 5-1 loss in a non-league game at Magness Arena. DU, which avenged a 2-1 Friday night loss, improves to 3-3-0. RPI falls to 1-1-1.
Denver opened the scoring with a power play goal off a rush at 7:17 of the first period. Junior center Ryan Dingle (Steamboat Springs, CO) tallied his third goal of the season when he redirected a Keith Seabrook (Delta, BC) cross-ice pass over Rensselaer sophomore netminder Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core). DU’s goal came just after RPI’s Kirk MacDonald (Victoria, BC/Victoria Salsa) hit the post on a wristshot.
The Engineers tied the game at 6:49 of the second period on a power play rush of their own. Sophomore Jake Morissette (Fruitvale, BC/Williams Lake) finished a tic-tac-toe passing play from close range. Jake Luthi (Palmer, AK/Sioux Falls) and MacDonald set up the goal.
The Pioneers picked up the next two goals, including one with just 44 seconds remaining in the middle stanza. Junior defenseman Andrew Thomas (Bow, NH) scored from the slot off a pass out of the corner by Brock Trotter (Brandon, MB) for a 2-1.
Denver went ahead by two goals at 3:45 of the third period on a Tyler Ruesegger (Lakewood, CO) wrist shot high to the stick side of Lange. A power play goal by senior defenseman Adrian Veideman (Sicamous, BC) with under four minutes remaining made it 4-1 in favor of Denver. An empty net goal finished the scoring for the home team.
Senior Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, AB) was outstanding for the Pioneers, finishing with 21 saves, including several big stops in the first period. Lange made 26 saves in the loss.
