CANTON, N.Y. -- Ali Mattison scored one goal and assisted on another and goaltender Lindsey Taylor had ten saves, including one on a penalty stroke, as St. Lawrence beat Rensselaer, 3-0, in Liberty League field hockey action on Sunday morning in a game that was postponed from Friday due to snow.
The Saints, now 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the Liberty League concludes its regular season at Cortland on Wednesday. The Saints finished second in the Liberty League and will play Skidmore in the league tournament semifinals at William Smith. RPI, now 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the Liberty League, finished fourth in the league standings and will play host William Smith in the tournament which will be played Nov. 4-5.
SLU opened the scoring 2:20 into the game when Erin Mellow sent a ball into the circle where Mattison controlled the pass and tapped it past RPI goalie Jen O’Neil for her ninth goal of the year and the eventual game winner.
It went to 2-0 off a penalty corner at 25:13 on a pretty scoring play. Patty Ball started the corner, sending the ball out to Mattison at the top of the circle. Ball then went to the near post as Mattison redirected the pass to Julia Kiernan, who sent the ball back across the front of the crease where Ball redirected it past the goalie for her fourth of the year.
The Red Hawks, who were outshot 14-4 in the first half and had only one shot on goal, battled to get back into it in the second half, but the Saints turned the pressure around late, breaking the ball out with a multi-player rush. First-year Joss-Elyse Smith scored her seventh of the season, tapping the ball past O’Neil from close range to make it a 3-0 game with 4:16 to play.
Taylor, who made nine of her ten saves in the second half, protected the shutout with 11.4 seconds to go when she stopped a penalty stroke by RPI's Lisa Pak. O'Neil posted 16 saves in the loss for the Red Hawks.
The Saints finished with a 23-18 edge in shots while RPI had a 12-5 edge in penalty corners, nine of those coming in the second half.
Rensselaer hosts nationally-ranked Middlebury on Wednesday (6:30pm).
