TROY, N.Y. – Senior Mary Walsh (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) netted the game-winning goal less than three minutes into overtime to lead nationally-ranked Rochester to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in non-conference women’s soccer action. With the victory, the Yellowjackets improve to 11-1-3 overall. The Red Hawks conclude their 2006 season with a 5-9-2 record.
Through a pile of players in front of the RPI net, Walsh was able to make contact, sending the ball past Red Hawks goalie Tara Marandino (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) for the goal at 91:34
The Yellowjackets held a 13-1 shot advantage over the Red Hawks in the first half. Despite numerous opportunities for both sides, neither team was able to get on the scoreboard.
Rochester senior Emily Urbanczyk (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) had the closest scoring chance nearing the end of regulation when she sent a shot just toward the net from the middle. Marandino made a leaping save, batting the ball up over the crossbar to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
Junior goalie Molly Leitch (Rocky River, OH/Rocky River) made one save in the win for Rochester, while her counterpart, Marandino, stopped nine shots in the loss.
The Yellowjackets return to action on Friday when travel to Emory University.
