Junior Dan Peace netted the game-winning goal with just 49 seconds remaining to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Colgate University in the championship game of the Governor’s Cup presented by Citizens Bank.

Rensselaer sealed the victory when junior Tyler Eaves sent a hard shot at Raiders goaltender Mark Dekanich from the left circle. Dekanich was unable to handle the puck, which came loose just enough for Peace to collect it and send it into the net. Kevin Broad, who hit Eaves with a head-man pass, also earned an assist.

The victory, which was Rensselaer’s first over the Raiders since March of 2002, improves the Engineers record to 2-1-2. The Raiders are now 3-3-1 on the season.

Colgate struck first with a power play goal by sophomore Tom Riley. Sustaining pressure in the zone, classmate Nick St. Pierre took a high shot in the slot which rebounded out to junior Tyler Burton. Burton chipped the puck up toward the net where Riley converted it for the goal.

The Engineers got on the board with an Oren Eizenman power play goal early in the second period. Sophomore Seth Klerer won an offensive zone faceoff to Kevin Broad, who tipped the puck to Eizenman. He brought the puck to the left point and range a shot off the goalpost and into the back of the net.

Sophomore Mathias Lange stopped 20 shots to earn the win. Dekanich finished with 20 shots, as well.

Lange was one of two Engineers selected to the All-Tournament Team, along with sophomore forward Seth Klerer.
