HANOVER, N.H. -- A hat trick from senior captain Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) propelled the Big Green’s women’s hockey team past the Engineers of Rensselaer, 5-1, today at Thompson Arena.
Mid way through the first period freshman Sarah Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.) broke a scoreless tie with her first career goal, when she picked up a loose puck in front of the net and jammed it past Rensselaer net minder Ashley Mayr to give the Big Green an early lead.
In the closing seconds of the first, RPI’s Emily Donowick (West Seneca, N.Y.) tied the game on a pass from Whitney Naslund, as she buried a shot past Dartmouth goalie Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) The Big Green out shot RPI 15-5 in the period.
The second period went to the way of the Green, as Apps notched her first goal of the game just four minutes in. Freshman Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) and Sue Schmitz (Brookefield, Wis.) were credited with assists on the goal. The assist for Schmitz marked her first collegiate point.
Apps netted her second goal with just six second remaining in the period, beating Mayr with a quick wrist shot from a difficult angle, to give the Big Green a 3-1 lead.
A slow third period picked up quickly when Apps lit the lamp for the third time, recording the true hat trick, at 14:55 in the third. Parsons picked up the playmaker; as she recorded her third assist of the game. Senior Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) was also given an assist on Apps’ mark.
With the seconds dwindling away in the game, sophomore Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) recorded her second goal of the season as she flung a shot towards the goal that got knocked in by a Rensselaer defender.
Clemis made 14 saves for the Big Green in the win, while Mayr stopped 36 Dartmouth chances. With the loss the Engineers fall to 1-7-0, and 0-2 in the league, while the Big Green improve to 2-0 in ECAC play.
Dartmouth returns to action on next weekend with a pair of games at St. Lawrence (7pm) and Clarkson (4pm) on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Rensselaer returns home on Saturday and Sunday for two games against Robert Morris in non-conference action. Both games begin at 2pm.
