TROY, N.Y. – Junior Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional) netted the game-winning goal with under ten minutes remaining in the match to lead Union College to a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League women’s soccer action. With the victory, the Dutchwomen improve to 6-2-2 overall and 3-0-0 in league play. The Red Hawks fall to 3-5-1 overall with an 0-3-0 mark in the Liberty League.
Cuozzo grabbed a loose ball at midfield, dribbled it up the left side, and sent a hard shot past the reach of Rensselaer goalie Tara Marandino (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) at 81:04. For Cuozzo, the goal was her team-leading fifth of the season.
The Dutchwomen held a 5-0 shots on goal advantage over the Red Hawks in the first half. Despite numerous opportunities for both sides, neither team was able to get on the scoreboard.
Union freshman Rachel Schneidman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) had the closest scoring chance in the first frame when she sent a shot just under the crossbar from the middle. Marandino made a diving save, batting the ball out of play to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
Freshman goalie Mia Simone (Rexford, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) made no saves in the win for Union, while Marandino, stopped six shots in the loss.
The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host league-rival Skidmore (4pm). Union plays Saturday at Vassar (2pm).
