TROY, N.Y. – Five different players scored and three goaltenders combined to stop 16 of 17 shots as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team defeated York University, 5-1, in an exhibition game at Houston Field House.
Junior Jake Morissette (Fruitvale, BC/Williams Lake Timberwolves) opened the scoring with a short-handed goal over the left shoulder of York goalie Kevin Druce (Kingston, ON/SSM) at 18:45 of the first period. Sophomore Seth Klerer, who chipped the puck to Morissette, earned the lone assist on the goal.
Rensselaer tallied twice in the second period, including a goal from the slot by sophomore Kurt Colling (Ripley, ON/Vernon Vipers) at 12:07 and a slap shot from Reed Kipp (Victoria, BC/Vernon Vipers) at 17:05, for a 3-0 margin after two periods.
Klerer increased the Engineers’ lead to four goals when he scored from just outside the left circle at 2:49 of the third period. York got on the board at the 17:31 mark on a goal by Kent Merriam (Kitchener, ON/Nait Ooks) but senior Tommy Green (Martensville, SK/Melfort Mustangs) got the goal back for the home team just 1:55 later.
Rensselaer, which outshot York, 38-17, got two saves from sophomore Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core), 13 saves from junior Jordan Alford (Red Deer, AB/Canmore Eagles), and one stop from junior Will Neubert (Painted Post, NY/Capital District Selects). Neubert, who was playing his first collegiate game, allowed the Lions’ lone goal.
Druce finished with 33 saves for York, including 18 in the first period and ten in the second.
Rensselaer opens the regular season next Saturday when fourth-ranked Boston University visits the Field House.
