TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Allegra Robinson (Milford, NH/Milford) tallied the game-winning goal mid-way through the first half and #25 Skidmore added another in the second frame to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 2-0, in Liberty League women’s soccer action.
With the victory, the Thoroughbreds improve to 8-1-3 overall and 3-0-1 in league play. The Red Hawks are now 3-6-1 with an 0-4-0 Liberty League record.
Skidmore jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 20:10 of the first frame after sophomore Sarah Whateley (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock Regional) crossed the ball from the right side to Robinson in the center slot. Robinson then volleyed the ball into the net past a diving Tara Marandino (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa).
The Thoroughbreds second goal came at 65:13 in the second half from junior midfielder Anna Cerio (Alfred, NY/Alfred-Almond Central). Classmate Jessica Morten (Fairfield, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) set up the tally, taking a corner kick which was then headed in by Cerio.
Rensselaer’s best chance to score came in the second frame, when freshman Jacquelyn Garalasco (Paramus, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) ducked around multiple Skidmore defenders in front of the goal for the shot, which went wide.
Junior Liza Mills (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) posted her fifth victory of the season in the win for Skidmore and made no saves. Marandino made one save in the loss for RPI.
Rensselaer returns to action on Tuesday for a non-conference match at Hartwick (7pm). Skidmore plays again on Wednesday at Union (7pm).
