GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Fighting Sioux came back from a 2-0 deficit, including two goals in the third period, en route to a 3-2 win over Rensselaer in a non-league women’s hockey game. North Dakota is now 2-0-0 on the season while the Engineers fall to 0-3-0 overall.
Freshman Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson) tallied her first collegiate goal at 8:34 of the first period to open the scoring. Senior Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) and sophomore Melissa Boik (Allen Park, MI/Honeybaked U-19) assisted on the tally.
Rensselaer jumped out to a two-goal advantage less than three minutes later when sophomore Melanie Guillemette (North Bay, ON/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) converted a pass from junior Julie Aho (Ann Arbor, MI/Birmingham Rangers) for a shorthanded goal at 11:17.
The Engineers surrendered a goal in the second period and two in the third frame, falling to North Dakota for the second straight game. RPI outshot North Dakota, 32-15.
Sophomore Emily Ford (Plymouth, MA/Tabor Academy) posted 12 saves for Rensselaer, while Brittany Kirkham (Nepean, ON/NCCP Jr. Raiders) made 30 saves in the win.
The Engineers return to the ice on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (3pm) at Boston University. North Dakota plays on Saturday against Minnesota-Duluth (4pm).
