ALLENTOWN, PA – Senior Justin Fields (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) got a tip-in at the buzzer to lead the Muhlenberg men’s basketball team to its first win of the season, a 62-60 victory over Rensselaer in the second game of the Scotty Wood Tournament, hosted by Muhlenberg. With the victory, the Mules improve to 1-0 on the season while the Red Hawks fall to 0-1.
With eleven seconds remaining in the game, junior Sam Simmons (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) hit a lay-up to tie the game at 60-60, but Fields would take advantage of a missed shot by teammate Chris MacIntosh (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), burying the rebound for the win.
Sophomore Mike Bernardini (Langhome, PA/George School) led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting for Muhlenberg. Senior Chris Huber (Orefield, PA/Parkland) chipped in 12 points and four rebounds, while classmate Jimmie Riggins (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Three players hit double digits in points for RPI, including 17 for Simmons, who also had four rebounds. Senior Clay Hadley (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Township) posted 13 points with five rebounds and freshman Ricky Philatre (Randolph, MA/Randolph) added 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
