Box Score
Bridgeport, CT -- Freshman Allysen Weidner (Wichita, KS) had two goals and one assist and fellow linemates Brooke Thompson (Rochester, NY) and Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN) each added four assists and three assists, respectively to lead Rensselaer to a 7-1 victory over Sacred Heart in women’s ice action Friday night at the Wonderland of Ice.
RPI dominated the game offensively, out shooting the Pioneers 63-8 for the game. Pioneers goaltender Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) kept SHU in the game with 56 saves in net.
The Engineers outshot Sacred Heart 25-3 in the first period and sophomore Jamie-Lynn Stewart (Cambridge, ON) put RPI on the board early, scoring her sixth goal of the year at the 3:42 mark. Stewart fired one shot on net that was stopped by Boulay, but quickly followed the play and got her own rebound, putting it into the back of the net. The Engineers went up 2-0 on a power-play goal by Weidner halfway through the opening period.
The Pioneers got on the board with 5:51 left in the first when sophomore Gina Arnone (Bridgewater, NJ) led a rush up the ice and fed the puck ahead to Whitney Dziama (Walpole, MA). Dziama fired a shot off the glove of RPI goaltender Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC), but the rebound bounced right to Jaclyn Rideout (Willmington, MA), who hammered the loose rebound into an open net for her third goal of the year.
Rensselaer re-gained a two goal advantage on a tally by Melissa Boik with 2:51 left in the first. Setting up in the offensive zone, Boik ripped a shot from the blue-line that found its way through the pads of a screened Boulay. It was Boik’s second goal of the year.
Senior Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB) put RPI up 4-1 at 9:51 of the second period. Sophomore Emily Donowick (West Seneca, NY) carried the puck behind the Pioneers net and fed a perfect centering pass to Daniel in the slot, who put a shot past Boulay for her second goal of the year.
Freshman Rossli Chace (Hampton Falls, NH) scored her first career goal at 7:04 of the third frame to extend the Engineers lead to 5-1. Wiedner scored her second goal of the night with 10:39 left off a pretty behind-the-back pass from Naslund, who had three assists. Junior Julie Aho (Ann Arbor, MI) closed out the scoring with a tally with 19 seconds left.
Mayr posted seven saves in the win for Rensselaer.
Sacred Heart and RPI will meet again Saturday afternoon at the Wonderland of Ice. Face-off is set for 2:00 pm.
