Box Score
Bridgeport, CT -- Sophomore Nicole McDonald (Ottawa, ON) had three goals and an assist and freshman Allison Wright (Oakville, ON) added a goal and three assists as RPI beat Sacred Heart, 10-2, in women’s ice hockey action Saturday at the Wonderland of Ice. With the victory, the Engineers improve to 5-10-0 on the season. The Pioneers are now 0-8-0.
Senior goaltender Stephanie Boulay (Anchorage, AK) racked up 37 saves, but Rensselaer’s attack was still too much for Sacred Heart. The Engineers out-shot the Pioneers 55-8 for the game, completing the weekend sweep.
After a scorless game in the early going, RPI took control when Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN) and McDonald each scored within five minutes late in the first period to break the scoreless tie.
Boulay continued to come up with big stops, but was beaten four more times in the second period courtesy of two more tallies from McDonald to give her a hat trick on the day. Junior Brooke Thompson (Rochester, NY), who posted four assists in yesterday's match, and Jodi Yaworski (Calgary, AB) contributed the other tallies in the frame.
The Pioneers finally got on the board 4:01 into the third period when senior Michelle Panella (Marlboro, NJ) broke down the left side and fired a shot high over the shoulder of Engineer goaltender Emily Ford (Plymouth, MA) for her first goal of the year.
Wright and Thompson each notched goals in a one minute span halfway through the period before the Pioneers struck again. Freshman Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) picked up a loose puck at center ice, skated in alone and ripped a shot that beat Ford for her first goal as a Pioneer.
Senior Sarah Daniel (Calgary, AB) would netted two goals in a 33 second span in the final minute of play to cap the scoring.
The Pioneers will take the ice again Friday night when they welcome Maine to the Wonerland of Ice. Game time is slated 7:00 pm. Rensselaer returns to the ice on December 1 and 2 when it host Cornell (7pm) and Colgate (4pm) at the Houston Field House.
