Shootout win gives RPI third place in 56th Annual Holiday Tournament

TROY, N.Y. - Freshman forward Paul Kerins scored as the extra attacker with 1:08 remaining in the third period and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team went on to tie The Ohio State University, 5-5, in the third-place game of the 56th Annual Rensselaer/Bank of America Holiday Tournament at the Houston Field House.

The Engineers, who got a hat trick and an assist from sophomore forward Andrei Uryadov, are now 4-3-4 on the season. They earned third place by virtue of winning the shootout, 5-4. Ohio State, which fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the third period, is now 4-7-3.

Uryadov put RPI on the board first with a power play goal at 15:33 of the first period. Buckeyes defenseman Sean Collins tied the score at 5:50 of the second before RPI scored the game’s next three goals for a 4-1 lead after two periods. Uryadov scored on a deflection off the goaltender at 13:38, Jake Morissette tallied from the bottom of the right faceoff circle, and Uryadov off a face-off with five seconds remaining.

Ohio State scored four goals in the third period to take a 5-4 lead. Johann Kroll scored at 3:44, Matt McIlvane notched a shorthanded goal less than two minutes later (5:05) and Collins earned his second of the night at 8:50. Dave Barton gave the visitors the lead at 16:56.

On Kerins’ game-tying goal, Uryadov passed the puck from behind the net to Garett Vassel, who took a shot from the left faceoff circle. Kerins deflected it past Ohio State netminder Nick Filion for his second goal of the season.

Filion finished with 16 saves while RPI’s Mathias Lange stopped 38 shots, including 13 in the first period, 11 in the second, 11 in the third and three in the overtime.

RPI returns to action with a pair of ECAC Hockey League games this weekend. The Engineers travel to Cornell on Friday and Colgate on Saturday. Both games begin at 7pm. Ohio State plays games at CCHA foe Michigan State on Friday and Saturday.
