WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Rensselaer held Williams to just 33.3 percent from the floor as the Red Hawks earned a 64-57 win over the Ephs at Chandler Gymnasium. RPI is now 3-1 while Williams falls to 2-2.
The Ephs held a 55-54 lead with just under six minutes to play but managed to score just one more basket the rest of the way. The Red Hawks claimed the lead when an Eph turnover led to a lay-up by sophomore Graham Gordon with 4:38 to go. Williams trailed 60-57 with four minutes remaining but could not pull any closer. Two key offensive boards in the last two minutes helped RPI wind down the clock.
Senior forward Sam Simmons led the Red Hawks with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Neal Wesson chipped in 15 points and a pair of assists. Senior forward Clay Hadley and freshman forward Ricky Philatre were both forces in the paint, collecting 11 points and three rebounds and 11 rebounds and four blocks, respectively.
Williams came out of the gate quickly, getting three early 3-pointers from junior point guard Chris Shalvoy. But three consecutive Eph turnovers helped the Red Hawks climb back into the contest. RPI went on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to three with 1:24 remaining in the first half. A Red Hawks hoop on the last possession of the first half made the score 34-31 Williams at the break.
The Ephs could not hold on to their advantage in the second half, as they shot just 26.7 percent from the floor. Williams scored 10 points over the final 14 minutes of the game.
