TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Jake Morissette had a goal and an assist to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team tie Quinnipiac University, 2-2, in an ECAC Hockey League game in front of a crowd of 4,624 at the Houston Field House.
Rensselaer improves to 3-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the league. The Engineers are now unbeaten in four straight games (2-0-2). Quinnipiac runs its unbeaten streak to six games, including four wins and two ties. The Bobcats are now 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the ECACHL.
Quinnipiac got the only goal of the first period, a shorthanded marker from Jean-Marc Beaudoin, who finished a two-on-one with freshman Brandon Wong at the 14:22 mark.
The homestanding Engineers knotted the score when senior Kevin Broad received the puck in the slot and was spun around. As he spun, his backhander squeezed between the post and goaltender Bud Fisher’s right skate.
The Bobcats retook the lead at 2-1 with a five-on-three power-play goal. Matt Sortberg’s shot from the point deflected to Engineer goaltender Mathias Lange’s left where Bryan Leitch was waiting to put the puck into the empty net.
The Engineers tied the game with 7:22 remaining in the second period. With a delayed penalty coming up on the Bobcats, Christian Jensen sent a pass to his right to Jake Luthi. Luthi’s shot deflected down to Morissette, who calmly shot it past Fisher who was expecting the puck to go the other way.
The best chance of the third period belonged to the Engineers as Peter Merth rang the crossbar in an odd-man situation with about three minutes remaining.
Lange (1-1-2) made 25 saves on the evening while Fisher (4-2-2) made 16 saves. The Bobcats were 1-9 on the power play and the Engineers were 0-7.
The Bobcats travel to Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend for ECACHL action while the Engineers host Merrimack in a non-league contest next Sunday at 5:00pm.
