TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Katie Stewart (Exeter, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks) scored on a 5x3 power play in the first frame to give Colgate a 1-0 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in ECAC Hockey League women’s action at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Raiders improve to 7-9-1 overall with a 7-3-0 league mark. The Engineers are now 6-11-0 and 2-4-0 in the ECACHL.
Colgate opened the scoring at 12:45 after sophomore Sam Hunt (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) sent a centering pass from the left boards to Stewart, who put it over the shoulder of Rensselaer goalie Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers) for the 1-0 advantage.
In the second period, both teams had several chances to bury the puck, but neither could find the back of the net. Colgate nearly gained a two-goal advantage with under a minute remaining in the frame on a breakaway by freshman Ali Edell (Madison, NJ/Berkshire School).
Sophomore Elin Brown (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) received a five-minute boarding major at 18:24 to force the Raiders to play the remaining few minutes of the second and the start of the third man down. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the second half, Edell had a short-handed breakaway and Mayr fell as she skated out of net towards Edell. Edell was held up by sophomore Jamie-Lynn Stewart (Cambridge, ON/Cambridge Jr. Fury), who was whistled for body checking, as Edell’s shot went wide of the open net.
Senior Brook Wheeler (Brussels, ON/Culver Academy) made 14 saves for the Raiders while her counterpart Mayr turned away 16 shots for the Engineers.
Rensselaer, which saw its three-game winning streak snapped in the loss, returns to action Friday evening against Union at the Houston Field House (7pm). Colgate is idle until January 5-6, when it travels to Wayne State for a two-game set with the Warriors.
