TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) shot 55.2%, including 63% from three-point range, and the Red Hawks held Morrisville State College to 28.1% shooting on their way to an 89-59 victory over the Mustangs in a non-league men’s basketball game at Robison Gym.
With the win Rensselaer improves to 5-2 on the season, including wins in five of its last six games. Morrisville State, which is playing its first season as a four-year school, falls to 1-6.
Eleven different players scored for RPI, which made 32 of its 58 shots, including 17 of 27 from behind the arc. Senior guard Neal Wesson (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth) led all scorers with 23 points on 8 of 11 shooting. He was 7 for 9 from three-point range. Wesson, the two-time Liberty League Guard of the Week, also had four rebounds (1 offensive), three assists, a block, and two steals in 20 minutes of action.
Junior forward Sam Simmons (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) had 13 points, six rebounds (3 offensive), and a steal while junior guard Kris Kowalczyk (Colonie, NY/Colonie) added 11 points, including 3 of 3 from three-point range, and three assists for the home team.
Morrisville State, which did not get a second half point until the 11:54 mark, made just 18 of 64 shots, including 8 for 30 from long range. Junior forward Davon Williams (New York, NY/Fredrick Douglas Academy) led the Mustangs in scoring and rebounding with 21 and 9 (6 offensive), respectively. He also had three steals in 26 minutes.
RPI returns to the court on Saturday afternoon at 3pm when Wentworth Institute of Technology comes to Troy. Morrisville State is idle until December 16 when it plays Fisher College in the University of Maine Presque Isle Classic. Tip-off is 2pm.
