Coleman & Lyons lead RPI to an 83-52 victory over Russell Sage

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s basketball team held Russell Sage to just 27.7% shooting from the floor and all 15 players had at least one point as the Red Hawks downed their city-rivals, 83-52, in non-conference action at the Robison Gym. RPI improves to 2-3 with the victory while the Gators fall to 0-6.

Rensselaer jumped out to a 9-0 lead early in the first half, and continued to build throughout the frame to take a 42-18 lead into the halftime. Sophomore Whitney Coleman (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda), who posted a game-high 13 points, led all halftime scorers with seven.

The Red Hawks came out dominant in the second half, building a 35 point lead (73-58) near the nine minute mark. Russell Sage went on an 8-0 run late in the game but were unable to make up the difference on the scoreboard.

In addition to Coleman, who also chipped in six rebounds (4 offensive), RPI got 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds (3 offensive) from junior Tory Lyons (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam). Sophomore Kerry Hayes (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) and freshman Sara Decker (Philmont, NY/Catholic Central) added nine points each in the victory.

Russell Sage was led by junior Ashli Fragomeni (Wynantskill, NY), who had 12 points and four rebounds. Senior Ashley Wetherall (Dalton, MA) chipped in with 11 points and a team-high five rebounds while junior Ashley Wojcicki (Broadalbin, NY) and sophomore Sarah Otto (Albany, NY) chipped in with seven points apiece.

Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday when it hosts UMaine-Ft. Kent at the Robison Gym (1pm). The Gators are now idle until January 5, when they travel to SUNY-Potsdam.
