TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Nicolette Leone (Trenton, ON/Telus Lightning) tallied two goals and goaltender Connie Craig (Calgary, AB/Springbank Bears) stopped all 24 shots she faced to lead Quinnipiac University to a 3-0 victory over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s ice hockey team in non-conference action this afternoon.
With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 10-16-5 overall, while the Engineers fall to 17-6-2 on the season.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead just under two minutes into the first period, off a bad bounce in front of the net. Off the face-off, the Engineers attempted to pass the puck up the ice, but it was quickly intercepted by Leone, who fired it at goaltender Rosina Schiff (St. Louis, MO/Jefferson High School) from just inside the neutral zone. The puck took an awkward bounce over the glove of Schiff and into the net at 1:34
The two teams skated through a scoreless second period in which the Bobcats outshot RPI, 10-5.
Junior Vicky Graham (Glen Riddle, PA/National Sports Academy) made it a 2-0 lead for Quinnipiac at the 5:46 mark, corralling a superb cross-ice pass from Antoinette Maldonado (Glendora, CA/Cal Selects) for her 13th tally of the season. Leone would make it 3-0 mid-way through the stanza, capitalizing on a 4-on-3 power play opportunity at 10:22.
Schiff finished with 21 saves in goal for RPI and is now 8-4-1 on the season. Both teams recorded 24 shots on goal in the game.
Rensselaer and Quinnipiac return to action tomorrow afternoon for a 2pm face-off at the Houston Field House. It is the final game of the season for the Engineers, who will honor its five graduating seniors.
